Joshua Elam

Joshua Elam is a systems architect, multi-instrumentalist, and studio musician who stepped into custom DSP development and PCB layout for a simple reason: he spent a fortune on synthesizers and was never 100% happy with the workflow. Rather than continuing to fight clumsy interfaces, he took the architecture into his own hands.

With a career spanning over a decade deploying enterprise infrastructure, he brings a deep engineering foundation to the math behind audio signal processing and computation. This technical discipline is balanced by his history as a touring and session player who records, mixes, and patches rigs where stability is everything.

Ancient Apparatus LLC was founded in 2026 as a dedicated laboratory to bridge these two worlds. Having completed a fully operational virtual groovebox engine and with several digital projects currently in development, the studio is actively shifting its focus toward physical translation: prototyping its very first boutique hardware instruments.

Because these designs are forged by a frustrated musician, they focus heavily on tactile layout intuition and stage reliability. The upcoming hardware won't promise total freedom from menu-diving—but it promises that every sub-menu, encoder placement, and shift function is engineered by someone who actually has to play the gear live.

Ancient Apparatus is small, transparent, and built from scratch. It is an autonomous exploration into custom firmware, minimalist industrial enclosures, and purposeful hardware design engineered to endure.
